Girlfriends(???) and Independence

For the first time, I took Rhett to a birthday party for one of the girls in his class at daycare.  He always plays with the girls, but the teachers have told me time and again it's because the girls play nicer and less aggressively, and that he is one of the most popular kids in the class.  Recently he was moved into pre-K, so I think he is struggling to establish his presence a little bit, and is still a little shy.  Needless to say, the girls at the party yesterday were from his 3-year old class, so he was excited to play with his buddies.  He always comes home talking about a few of the girls, but nothing more than telling me things that they've said or things that they've played.  Well, yesterday I got to talk to some of the girls mothers.  Apparently, it is a girlfriend/boyfriend thing, and it changes from week to week on which one Rhett is "with."  Yes, the girls go home and tell their mothers things like "Rhett is with so-and-so this week."  What's funny to me is that he never ever tells me this part of things.  Maybe he doesn't understand it since he doesn't have older siblings talking teaching him about dating???  But, it was really funny hearing the moms talk about it, and funny to me that Rhett, being the boy, doesn't seem to talk about it at all.  Anyway, they had so much fun yesterday at this party.  It was at a huge bounce/gymnastics facility, and it was the first time that Rhett said "Mom, you go over there" while pointing to the front room where the parents were clustered together.  Wow, that was a change for me.  This streak of independence came one day after Emma demonstrated some independence of her own...

Emma is notorious for not fully embracing other adults (even adults she sees every day).  She will say hi and wave, but is always glued to me when other adults are around.  At Rhett's final swim lesson (also, the demonstration day), Emma started out sitting in my lap.  Then, all of the sudden she decided to venture over near another mom.  Not only did she just decide to go by someone else, she decided to sit right next to this other mom.  After five minutes of sitting right next to this other mom, she decided to plant herself right in the poor lady's lap, and she would get mad if I looked at her.  The funny thing about this is that we've only been around this lady for the last week, and Emma has only seen her for all of ten minutes throughout the week before this incident.  It was so funny because she decided to break away with someone who is basically a stranger even to me, and it was borderline inappropriate because it's not like this other mom was inviting her over.

So, the word of the week is INDEPENDENCE!

I also wanted to share some pictures from play-doh time yesterday.  Rhett loves all things crafty, which he calls "projects," and just couldn't be bothered to look at the camera.  He probably does at least an hour or more of projects every day that he's home.

The reason I whipped out the camera was because Emma's tongue was in full-force during this play-doh activity.  Here's the mild version...

And, when it wasn't like that, it was all the way out...for thirty minutes or more, she had her tonguing hanging out in various degrees :)
